"When Yoh was just a child, he lived in Japan with his mother, father and little sister. Everything was decent until an earthquake occurred which changed his life. His mother was killed and the blank expression on his little sister's face made him feel as if he had to protect her in place of his dead mother. To do so he became a liar. Yoh has a large sister complex for and spends most of his time worrying about Minatsuki and won't allow anything bad to happen to her, even if she is wild and insane --he still loves her very much.

When Minatsuki killed their father she was sent to prison and left Yoh with the idea of stealing to get thrown in the Deadman Wonderland prison, so that he could earn cast points, enough to bail her out.
